The Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto Canada (MOCA) is in a defining phase of its evolution, as it moves into a landmark heritage building and advances 20 years of exhibiting, collecting and nurturing innovative contemporary art and cultural practices.

In spring 2018, MOCA will open its 55,000 square foot purpose-designed home in a former industrial space in Toronto’s Junction Triangle. The museum will function as an inclusive cultural catalyst where artists and audiences can step into a wider world of contemporary art, and be part of a global movement defined by new ideas and new forms.

The expanded MOCA will realize its vision through three major exhibitions per year accompanied by a cohesive set of complementary programs, 20+ artist production studios and a renewed commitment to the permanent collection. The institution will be unique in Toronto for putting artists and constituents at the core of its programming, while at the same time seeking international partnerships to encourage exchange and plurality.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto Canada is seeking a creative and energetic special events professional to join its growing team. The Special Events Officer is responsible for the planning and execution of signature fundraising events and development-related stewardship and cultivation receptions, as well as exhibition previews and public openings.

The Special Events Officer collaborates closely with colleagues across all departments as well as senior volunteers, with a particular focus on committees related to special events. They will play a critical role within MOCA’s Development team, supporting the execution of an integrated suite of fundraising initiatives including: a multi-million-dollar launch campaign; major gift, grant and corporate partnership programs; a compelling membership program; and two signature annual fundraising events. The successful candidate will also play a key role in the execution of special events surrounding MOCA’s spring 2018 facility/program launch.
The position is ideal for a savvy project manager who is passionate about high quality special events and has experience working within or alongside a team of fundraising professionals, ideally at a not-for-profit/charitable cultural institution.


  • Develop and lead the production, evaluation, communications, collateral, reporting and stewardship plans for all fundraising-related special events including but not limited to
    • An annual gala
    • An annual party designed to engage the 19 to 45 demographic
    • An ongoing series of cultivation and stewardship receptions
  • Collaborate with Development colleagues to
    • Execute revenue generation strategies for fundraising-related special events, including sponsorships, table and ticket sales
    • Secure and manage in-kind partnerships
    • Develop and oversee a centralized schedule of fundraising-related special events that cultivate existing supporters and attract new supporters
    • Coordinate partnership program activations
    • Oversee external third-party fundraising event execution
  • Collaborate with Programming, Marketing/Communications and Development colleagues to plan and produce exhibition preview and public opening parties
  • Develop and maintain portfolio-relevant budgets and financial reports, coordinate all related accounting
  • Act as the point of contact for all special event related vendors and suppliers
  • Coordinate all special event committee recruitment, servicing and activities
  • Collaborate with and organize the senior management team and senior volunteers as required for the execution of projects under management
  • Manage the participation of internal and external staff as well as external volunteers on portfolio-relevant projects
  • Support departmental evaluation and reporting strategies
  • Participate in the planning of annual and longer-term fundraising strategies
  • Be an informed member of Development team, make creative connections between people, projects and programs to increase revenues and/or supporter engagement
  • Represent the Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto Canada in the greater cultural, philanthropic and professional communities
  • Actively research and keep up-to-date on portfolio-relevant trends, innovations and technologies
  • Maintain a high degree of motivation, work ethic and attention to detail
  • Participate in and support additional fundraising initiatives and/or organizational projects as required


Experience and Skills

  • A minimum of three years of special event management experience
  • Strong working knowledge of and relationships with event related vendors
  • Experience conceiving and producing artistic programming for special events
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Toronto’s arts community
  • Strong organization skills, the ability to manage multiple activities at once to meet tight deadlines
  • Demonstrated project management expertise
  • Experience managing project budgets of $100K+ and generating financial reports
  • Effective and clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Superior interpersonal and relationship management skills
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills, experience with Tessitura is considered an asset
  • Experience working at a multi-stakeholder not-for-profit and/or in a start-up environment is considered an asset
  • Relevant post-secondary education including degrees and/or certificates in event management, arts administration, fundraising or marketing are considered an asset
